A delegation from The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA)
and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) paid a courtesy call on Embu
Governor, Martin Wambora, earlier today. The delegation was in the county
exploring the possibility of upgrading Embu Airstrip into a Commercial Airport.

In August last year, Wambora brought Embu County into
the limelight when he announced that the county was exploring the possibility
of upgrading the airstrip into a Commercial Airstrip that would start hosting commercial
airlines. The governor noted that the Ministry of transport was inspecting the
airstrip and would give a go ahead after the inspection.
Speaking in Mbeere South at a public baraza, the governor
noted that his administration had already written to Joseph Nkaissery, the
interior cabinet secretary and he had given a nod to the use of the current
runway by commercial airlines.
The delegation that visited the governor’s office today
was headed by Capt. Gilbert Macharia Kibe, the KCAA director and Mr. Johnny
Andersen, the CEO/Director of the Kenya Airports Authority.
Currently, Embu Airstrip has a runway of 1.6
kilometers. The runway is used by the Kenya Air Force for drones that require
100 meters of the runway only. Last year, Wambora noted that the airstrip would
be upgraded at a cost of Kshs.10bn.
Governor Wambora notes that Embu County has a Commercial
Aviation potential. If upgraded, the airport will accommodate commercial
aircrafts and include several hangers. The airport will be used to transport
people and agricultural produce to different destinations.
Wambora notes that this will spur the growth of the
economy of Embu County because important products like mangoes, bananas and
miraa will now be transported to different markets directly.
